Wisair Pushing UWB to Very High Data Rates via PULSERS Phase II

European working group exploring more than 1 Gpbs data rates for UWB

CAMPBELL, Calif., – April 26, 2006 – Wisair, a leading provider of WiMedia Ultra Wideband (UWB) chipset solutions based on Certified Wireless USB, today announced that it is leading the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) Very High Data Rate (> 1 Gbps) work package for the PULSERS Phase II (Pervasive Ultra-wideband Low Spectral Energy Radio Systems Phase II) Research Project.

PULSERS Phase II is a consortium of 36 industrial and academic organizations, which was formed to research and promote short-range wireless systems based on UWB. Following the successful completion of the first phase of PULSERS in December 2005, Wisair is now heading the second phase of the OFDM technology Very High Data Rate (VHDR) work package. In the VHDR work package, Wisair is collaborating with four other companies to evaluate, conduct performance simulations on possible Physical Layer Protocol (PHY) schemes, and generate a verification platform.

“Since its inception, Wisair has been at the forefront of UWB developments, in terms of developing the first WiMedia-based UWB silicon, obtaining FCC certification, and working with standardization and worldwide regulatory bodies,” said Gadi Shor, chief technology officer at Wisair. “Through our collaborative efforts with PULSERS Phase II, we are forging into new data rate arenas that will make UWB technology even more appealing for a broader spectrum of wireless applications. We are excited about the future success of UWB and toward taking this technology to its next generation.”

Wisair is also contributing to the Standardization and Regulation work package whereby PULSERS’ studies and findings are presented to regulators in Europe and worldwide. In an earlier effort, Wisair cooperated with PULSERS to demonstrate Detect and Avoid (DAA) technology to European and Japanese regulators as a mitigation technology allowing coexistence with other radio services such as WiMAX and 3G/4G cellular networks.

As a Promoter Member of the WiMedia alliance, Wisair is committed to standards-based solutions. Along with its contributions to PULSERS, the company is continuing to support and contribute to the commercialization of WiMedia and Certified Wireless USB based UWB solutions.

About PULSERS
The PULSERS (Pervasive Ultra-wideband Low Spectral Energy Radio Systems) project aims at exploring of the enormous potential of the innovative and disruptive radio technology embodied in Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and at enabling introduction of new services, applications and devices based on this technology. The first phase, the Integrated Project PULSERS, started in January 2004 within the 6th Framework of the EU-IST Programme (FP6), and was successfully completed year-end 2005. The successor PULSERS Phase II builds on the results of the first phase and aims to research Ultra Wide Band (UWB) innovative devices and system concepts starting with proofs of concept and arriving to fully working experimental prototypes enabling verification of the objectives and the technical approach.

With active participation of more than 30 elected partners worldwide, PULSERS has brought together UWB-Radio Technology (UWB-RT) experts from various European countries, and is cooperating with important UWB players from Asia. PULSERS’ first project phase focused on short-range wireless systems based on novel UWB physical layer (PHY) and media access control (MAC) technologies to enable high data rate transmission in support of multimedia applications as well as systems supporting data transactions combined with position location and tracking. PULSERS Phase II will continue to explore advances in the area of silicon technology to make UWB chipsets and modules economical and low-power consumers. In addition, issues of coexistence and integration with current wireless technologies in realistic user environments will be addressed and significant efforts are anticipated to continue toward the acceptance of UWB radio technology in the appropriate worldwide regulatory bodies and standardization forums.
